Illinois Speed Press

Illinois Speed Press was an American rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1965. The band consisted of Paul Cotton (guitar, vocals), Kal David (guitar, vocals), Bob Destocki (keyboards), Mike "Hoss" Andes (bass), and Fritz Richmond (drums).

The band's sound blended elements of folk, rock, and blues, and they were known for their tight harmonies and dual guitar work. They signed to Columbia Records in 1968 and released their self-titled debut album in 1969. The album was produced by Paul Rothchild, who had also worked with The Doors and Janis Joplin, among others.

Illinois Speed Press toured extensively throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, sharing bills with acts such as The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, and The Grateful Dead. They released two more albums, "Duet" in 1970 and "Passepied" in 1971, before disbanding in 1972.

Cotton was approached by Richie Furay, the co-founder of Poco, who, remembering him from his Illinois Speed Press performances on the same bill with his band, asked him to audition as a possible replacement for co-founder Jim Messina, who was planning to leave. Cotton won the spot and stayed with the band well into the 21st century; he died on August 1, 2021 at the age of 78.

Kal David formed the group The Fabulous Rhinestones and later worked as a session guitarist for artists such as Etta James and Johnny Rivers. Kal David died on August 16, 2022 at the age of 79.

Although Illinois Speed Press never achieved the commercial success of some of their contemporaries, they were respected for their musicianship and influence on other artists.
