John Kongos

John Kongos is a South African musician, singer, and songwriter who was born on August 6, 1945. He is best known for his 1971 hit single "He's Gonna Step on You Again", which was later covered by the Happy Mondays in 1990 and became a UK number one hit. Kongos' music is a fusion of rock, pop, and African rhythms.

Kongos began his music career in the 1960s as a member of the band Johnny Kongos and the G-Men, but it wasn't until the early 1970s that he achieved mainstream success. In addition to "He's Gonna Step on You Again", Kongos had other chart hits in the UK, including "Tokoloshe Man" and "Great White Lady". He also released several albums in the 1970s, including "Kongos", "Lavender Popcorn", and "Kongos in Concert".

After the 1970s, Kongos continued to make music, although he didn't achieve the same level of success as he did in the early part of his career. He released several more albums in the 1980s and 1990s, including "Happiness is Not Around the Bend" and "Kongos". In 2013, his music gained renewed attention when "He's Gonna Step on You Again" was used in a commercial for the car company Volkswagen.

Kongos' music has been described as eclectic and innovative, incorporating elements of African music and rock. He has been cited as an influence by several musicians, including Jarvis Cocker of Pulp and Liam Gallagher of Oasis. Despite not achieving the same level of commercial success as some of his contemporaries, Kongos is considered to be an important figure in the development of South African rock music.
